Need level sensor for radioactive environment

All right here is the situation: I have a 8ft tank that the level will be measured continuously from 1-7 ft and will control pump speed. The medium is primarily water with high salt and sludge content, plenty of solids. This tank is sitting in the bottom of a void 30 ft below. The atmosphere and water are highly radioactive so electronics that are not hardened will be destroyed. Does anyone know of any solutions? Help!!

Hi there,

Hardened electronics are normally unique designs from scratch and therefore very expensive, so what some companies do is to install cheap standard instruments and change them out once a year. You first need to determine how fast a standard instrument's electronics will fail due to radioactive exposure.

As far as I know only Gamma direct and full exposure will cause damage in a short period of time. Most others will take a while to cause serious damage to materials and electronics.

If you can figure out how long a standard instrument will last it might be more cost effective to just replace them on a regular interval before they actually fail.

There are a lot of very cheap products on the market to choose from.
You can use a pressure transmitter, DP transmitter or ultrasonics in this application.

If you want to install the instrument in a lead enclosure, the wall thickness all around needs to be 2" thick. a Bit impractical to do but also a option if you can do it.
