Hi. Rather than start from scratch, is there anywhere I can find tested source code for a modbus serial slave protocol stack that can be compiled and/or modified to run in an embedded DOS environment? Willing to purchase a high quality commercial solution to save development and test time.

Why don't you try triangle microworks Modbus Slave Source Code Library. The same is ANSI C compliant stack which is very easy to compile and implement on any embedded environment.
