The Second Great Convergence: Nanotechnology http://www.automationtechies.com/sitepages/pid1284.php

"NBIC: the convergence of nanotechnology, biotechnology, information and cognitive sciences. Futurists call this the second great convergence.

"The first was the convergence of communications technologies, voice, data, and the Internet.

"I no longer have a fax machine. With eFax (www.efax.com) I have a virtual fax machine anywhere I am, whether I am on my own computer or not, for about $0.20 a page. Yes, having a dedicated fax machine is marginally less expensive, but I don’t have to fix it, buy toner for it, or provide it desk space.

"I don’t even have to have a telephone line. Vonage (www.vonage.com) will let me use my broadband Internet connection to bypass my “traditional” telephone provider with a flat rate plan that lets me call anywhere in the USA and Canada for no long distance charges. They will let me call anywhere in the world less expensively than any other method, and nobody can tell that I’m calling on the Internet.

"So, I have the ability to have one pipe coming into my house and my office over which I can communicate with anyone anywhere by any method except shouting down a tin can and string. This is a very down-home example of the first great convergence.

"It took less than 10 years to make this possible."
