Dear List,
Just wondering what does the 'RS' (as in RS 232, RS 485, RS 482, etc. etc.) stands for.
Thanks

Recommended Standard. However, the Electronics Industry Association (EIA) wants all the standards to be referenced, for example, as EIA-485 versus RS-485.

If my recollection serves me, RS-232 is the Recommended Standard number 232 from the Engineering Dept of the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) hence the full name occasionally
seen: EIA RS-232 (typically) Revision C.

The standard defines the connector, pins, signal names and directions as well as the electrical characteristics. Ironically, I believe the standard only specifies 25 pin connectors which are rare today.
