The most important consideration, often overlooked is:
What do you need to accomplish with the expert system for the fermentation?

You would probably be interested in the recent articles in InTech (June and July
1999?) by Joseph Alford et al. of Lilly,
on an expert system application to fermentor control. Check the ISA web site at

I am looking for an economic alternative to monitor and control the air
conditioner of several distributed substations in order to detect their
failure before the electronical equipment, that they contain, fails
because
of the heat.

Any suggestion?

Betty,

If you can not afford a medium scada system (I mean: a small rtu, data radio
link, etc.), you would try to using the power lines as TX/RX medium and a
rtu or plc, so you do not have to worry about distances and access to the
location(remember the ISO/OSI model?).
