OPC DA users: Microsoft update affects DCOM security

Softing provides industrial protocol analyzers, gateways and OPC software so Softing is well versed in the intricacies of OPC DA. Microsoft's DCOM is an integral part of OPC DA, a widely used data transfer protocol in the automation and control markets.

Attached is Softing's notice of the history of Microsoft's DCOM security patches released in Windows updates, and the upcoming Windows update which will disable the registry key that ignores the latest version patched DCOM to force the use of the latest DCOM version. The implication is that the OPC DA applications using the older DCOM might well not function with DCOM's higher security version.

This does affect OPC UA because UA does is not platform dependent and does not require Windows' DCOM functionality like OPC DA does.

This applies to all OPC DA server(s)/client(s); it is not specific to Softing branded products.
