Optical "light on mode", what the heck?

Hi y'all, I wonder if you can help me. :)

We have a device (Areva P14x protection relay) with an optical interface. However, the Tx pin is constantly emitting light, thus blocking half-duplex communication on the other side (equipped with Korenix JetCon 2401). So far, we have found out only that Areva relay employs some so called "light on mode" on its optical interface, but we are unable to find any information on the meaning/principle/function of this. Can you please help, someone?

Hi,

Any optical interface for communication will have a laser enabled mode for pumping the signal through the media, which will be the output through the TX. Normally there should be an option of auto shutdown mode of the laser (ALS) in case of a break in the medium of communication, and also can be forced off if option is available.
