My background is discrete manufacturing, where field device designations are usually derived from the I/O point they connect to or the drawing line number the device originates on. I'm now tasked with designing a control panel for the process industry. The device designations of the field devices are already defined in the P&ID. I'm wondering what the standard practice is in the process industry for showing field devices on the control panel drawings. Should I manually name the devices based on the P&ID designation or use line number and I/O point with some kind of cross reference to P&ID designation? Any input on this is appreciated.
