Can anyone recommend a publication on the "correct" way of ISA symbols and techniques on generation of P&ID diagrams.

I suppose you are wanting to draw P&ID symbols and drawings.You can get a library of P&ID symbols in a clip art format from ISA (at www.isa.org)
About usage to machine tools---No P&ID means Piping and Instrumentation Diagram and as such is only used in the process industries.
