Package boiler combustion controls

My plant has 5 package water tube boilers. Currently with Bailey SLC01 controllers. These controllers are obsolete and need replacing. I was originally going to replace with new Single loop controllers like Prefered or ABB mod 30s. however I'm looking for an alternative, a single unit type for each boiler separate power supply. And it needs to have modbus/opc capability to talk to existing Cond NT platform. I'm looking for reliability and inexpensive. Aren't we all.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

This may not help or be overkill. At a HRSG conference I talked to a vendor about a new control system for power plants. He said they have one installed at a Trash Burner and it works great. Also it runs commodity electronics so it is reasonably inexpensive. They did have three propriety controllers, for turbine control and vibration monitoring and something else (I was bored by then). I think you would not need the expensive items. The processor is a dual redundant pentiumIV running RT linux. Complete trending, HMI etc. It should have no problem centrallizing control of 5 boilers. Look at http://www.turbinedoctor.com/turbonet/ and see if it can help.

At our plant we just upgraded one boiler and added two larger ones using Allen Bradley Control Logix units. On each boiler we had separate controllers for burner management and for process
control. These units then communicate over DF1
to Fisher Delta V Hybrid DCS for interface to our
utlities DCS.

There are many qualified integrators out there
and control platforms. At minimum I would suggest
separate controllers for the Burner Management and the steam and fuel streams control with some type of MMI.

Cleaver Brooks, Wi has a new and tested boiler control package in the Hawk ISC system. It is top of the line stuff and not cheap. Not sure if it is retrofittable to not CB systems.

Another company that seems to have reasonable product is Preferred Utilities mfg, CT.

good luck

You might want to look at the MATRIX Control System from MTL and Standard Automation. We installed one at our Plant and the start up went very smoothly. It is competitively priced with PLCs and the other Hybrid Systems. Check them out at Standardautomation.com. Good luck with your project.

Try the Honeywell HC900 hybrid controller. It has a program already written for drum level and fuel/air ration control.

Very slick.

You can consider multi-loop controller. We (SMAR) make one called CD600 which is often used for boiler control. A single unit handles four loops, e.g. master pressure, combustion, temperature, and draft. See here:
http://www.smar.com/products/cd600.asp

OPC server is available for it so it is easy to integrate with software. Configuration is also done from software using function block diagram language.

I would either go for DeltaV or Yokogawa. Their system is well proven and we know they will not make it obsolete tomorrow! You can buy some used parts from the internet.

You can buy ABB MOD30 without any hesitation. I have marketed this instruments for N![ factorial] boilers & till date never been called for servicing. If you are looking only for reliability you can opt for it. In fact when MOD 30 came into market they have concentrated initially only on Boiler control. Simply buy it. Even on this website not a single question is appeared about MOD 30 problem.

Yes I would agree their ICN link would be very expensive.

Other option is Moore Products 353 controller, this also would do your job perfectly.

Personally, I would prefer to use the Siemens/Moore 353 controller. It is much less expensive, very versatile, and it comes with a Modbus interface.
Look at this web page:

I am looking for a Serial Interface Adapter to communicate with SLC or CLC controllers. I am having the same problem finding parts for obsolete equipment.

Thanks

FYI, The parts and repair services for the SLCs and CLCs can now be ordered from the company that was divested from “ABB / Bailey”. The Company name is MicroMod Automation, Inc.

We can also discuss a migration path to updated controllers as well.
