David: Dallas Semiconductor makes just such an "digital temperature sensor" - the DS-1820. This sensor is a digital, addressable sensor that is shaped like a TO-92 transistor - quite small. 3 leads make it work, Data, Ground, and (optionally) power. They are about $6.00 a piece in single quantities from places like Newark or possibly even Dallas Semiconductor itself.
