Any suggestions for a linear positioning system accurate to .01" over 40 feet. Prefer non-contact, i.e. laser, but will settle for linear encoder or equal.

I'd consider a multi turn SSI absolute encoder. They can generate 24 or 25 bits of binary or gray scale for output.

I am a huge fan of the sickoptic laser range finders. They can tell you where you are to within a couple millimeters over a kilometer. They have a cheaper model that is only good for 100 meters, but that should suit your application. i use them for automated cranes and stackers. Great stuff!
