Power Line Carrier Communication

I am trying to design a Power Line Carrier Communication link between electric locomotives and a wayside controlling station over the 25KV traction line. Could somebody give me some guidance on how to interface the Very Low Frequency (10 KHZ) transmitter & Receiver to the traction line ? What are the hazzards & difficulties that will creep up for such a system ? What should be the essential design considerations ?

These things are commercially available off the shelf. They have been tested and proven for years. Why re-invent the wheel?

Hi Indrajit,

You should do a google search on "Power Line Carrier".

Power Line Carrier systems require several modules, like the PLC modem, coupler, line trap, etc. If it's an academic project, then you can consult the following URLs

http://www.eecg.toronto.edu/~tooraj/powerline.html

http://www.ece.msstate.edu/class/ec...0_fall/power_line_communication/html/toc.html

If it's an actual application, then you should use standard industrial modules from ABB or similar manufacturers. The following link may help:

Hi, Rahul,

Thanks for your suggestions..its been a great help.. What I really wanted to know is the coupling method to hook my PLCC system to a 25KV traction line..Most sites discuss the methods for PLCC on 110/230 VAC domestic lines. A 25KV Traction Line has different noise characterestics as compared to the domestic line.

Anyhow, thanks for your help.

My dear Friend

Hopefully I have designed such coupler for 20kv power lines.

I can tell you that there is IEC358 for Coupling capacitors and it's test rutine which you have to follow up.

the range of cap is between 5 to 10 nf and the most important part is tranformer for isolation and Impedance matching.

Don't forget to implement a surge arrestor in the secondry terminal.

Good luck to you.

hi

i read about ur work on PLCC as described below by you. I wish to enquire seeing your knowledge in PLCC whether PLCC technology could be used for DATA communication from Analog devices to an Energy acccounting centre.

Pls reply my query on the following email id
