Prosoft MVI56 Modbus Module

I have to configure a Control Logix system so it can be controlled with a SCADA running WinCC and communicating via Modbus. A

Anyone out there have any tips or sources where I can learn an easy way of accomplishing this? I've looked at the code posted on the Prosoft site but its difficult to interpret by someone with no modbus exposure. Thanks

Dear GMorris,

This is absurd. I am sure it will be possible -- if you don't mind LOTS of work and a high probability of failure. You have mixed
controller, HMI, and network packages from the 3 top producers of PLCs. They were never designed to work together.

WinCC uses OPC and so does ControlLogix. I assume that you can put together a system based on use of OPC to access the data on
ControlLogix from WinCC over a Modbus network. Maybe you should consider use of Profibus that may be better supported.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Dick, and echoing my toughts as well on this subject. But with that aside, do you know of and rosources where I can up to speed on Modbus within 24 hours?

Dear GMorris,

We have use this MVI56 Prosoft card for Contrologix in one of our Nestle Project, its not true that you have to use profibus on this because the Contrologix is the one who will handle the gathering of Data from the modbus protocol / network that means once you have configure it Contrologix will be the one to pass it thru Rslinx OPC server to WinCC, just follow the procedure attached in the user manual of your MVI56 and I'm sure you will get it right!

Also I want to make a comment on Richards statement that "3 top producers of PLCs. They were never designed to work together."

It's not true because was an encompas partner of Rockwell Automation the manufacturer of Contrologix, Prosoft produces the interface modules that serves as a Gateway of Contrologix to any type of protocol THEY WERE DESIGNED TO WORK TOGETHER.

Also OPC was design as an open protocol for all types of controller and software AGAIN THEY WERE DESIGNED TO WORK TOGETHER.

If Dick is correct and WinCC will act as an OPC client, just purchase an OPC server that will access the serial port on the CLX ( or you could get an Ethernet card), such as Kepware, or AB. The Modbus card just adds complexity and restricts bandwidth. This is not the application for which it was intended.

The "controlled with" is what scares me. I am not totally sure that you will be able to control with the setup for which you are striving. I would be sure that you could share data and transfer files, but the control aspect you seek may be somewhat of a challenge at the least. Having persued, and then abandoned a similar feat between Modicon and AB, I do believe that there would be a more, albeit expensive, attainable control scenario.

Dear Glenn,

Check out the official Modbus web site: http://www.modbus-ida.org
If you register for free, you can download all kinds of documents on Modbus.

By the way, when Siemens implements Modbus, they call it J-Bus and the registers are numbered from 0 (zero) rather than the Modbus way in which the starting register is numbered 1 (one). Other than that, they are identical.

Hello Gmorris

You don't need to use a MVI56MCM módule. You can use a 1756-ENBT 100mb/sec Ethernet module and 9355-WABOEM-ENE RSLINX SOFTWARE. THE RSLINX SOFTWARE IS A OPC SERVER AND WINCC IS A OPC CLIENT.
