Dear All,

Protocol limitations? There seems to be no limitation - at least with regards to the number of protocols that are implemented. More to come! The sky is the limit.

The IEC TC 57 has standardized a SCADA protocol (IEC 60870-5-101 and 104) used all over. The next step is the standard IEC 61850 (Communication
within and with substations).

Many major utilities AEP, EDF, RWE, EON, ... and almost all major vendors like ABB, Alstom, General Electric, Siemens, ... are involved in the standardization of IEC 61850 (UCA tm). To learn more about IEC 61850, please visit our website at "http://www.nettedautomation.com/solutions/demo/20020114/index.html":http://www.nettedautomation.com/solutions/demo/20020114/index.html for a free demo server and
"http://www.nettedautomation.com/news/n_51.html":http://www.nettedautomation.com/news/n_51.html for a comparison of IEC 60870-5-101/-103/-104, DNP3, and IEC 60870-6-TASE.2 with IEC 61850

2002 is the year where many people get prepared to implement, integrate, and use the IEC61850/UCA approach. Grant Gilchrist from Harris Energy
Services (Calgary) stated recently at the Distributech 2002 in Miami: "UCA and IEC 61850 have the potential to revolutionize the utility
industry. ... one must be prepared."
