They are roughly equivalent. AB software runs rings around the S7 software for usability.

S7 has a nifty feature where you can store the PLC, HMI and drive stuff in a single project. I think AB has recently introduced something similar that does not work as well.

Siemens has better support overseas, AB in the US.

If you want Profibus, S7 does it better than AB. AB does EtherNet/IP and Devicenet if that matters to you. Not sure if S7 even offers either.

The AB HMI and SCADA packages are easier to use than the Siemens equivalents, but it is pretty much a wash as to functionality.
