root blower and anti surge

Hi guys,

I know that the centrifugal compressors need anti surge system, but how with the root blowers? do they need that too?

I think all the blowers need anti surge system to avoid surge effect, it means that that root blower included too. So, do the root blower need anti surge system?

for more detail data, my root blower capacity is 60 m3/min, the outlet pressure is 50 kPa gauge.

Thanks before,
Mike

Mike,

Roots type blowers have a very steep pressure vs. flow curve. Because of this characteristic, when applied against a static (flat) or static-resistive (nearly flat) system curve they tend to be self regulating. However, if the system curve can drive the blower below minimum flow (highly resistive system curve) then the pressure may be too high and cause damage. If this is the case a blow-off valve can be installed for pressure relief and thereby protect the blower and the system.

I suggest you contact the manufacturer. They most likely will have a blow-off valve as an option to purchase.
