Has anyone used the Rovisys OPC90 Server with a Bailey in90 DCS via an ICI03/SCSI on Windows 2003 Server? If so was it a pleasant experience or should I look eleswhere for an OPC Driver i.e. Matrikon, ABB, etc.? The data needs to end up in a PI Database for plant modelling.

We looked at it for an InSQL Server upgrade we did last year. I tried a demo version and found it easy to setup, only each block has to be configure in the server. We ended upgrading from the Standard Automation IO Server to Matrikon and have found it excellent.

RoviSys is also in use on another line with ProcessLogix and the engineers on that site seem happy with it.

Using OPC90 with PI is easy to setup. The OPC90 user manual includes an appendix that overviews how to set it up. Building the OPC90 database is very easy. It can be built from importing a CSV file. The format of this file is documented in the OPC90 user manual. It contains, tag name, type, description, address. Digital tags also optinally include the logic state desriptors. We can build the CSV file from a Bailey console database or other source.

 

I'm not sure if he is referring to the PI product made by OSI or just the generic term PI Database (Process Information Database). If we are all talking about OSI PI then there are native connectors that allow PI to collect data directly from the Bailey controllers. In fact I believe that this is the best interface to PI, you get all the advantages of exception based reporting that the Bailey system provides with the data collection and management power of the PI system. An excellent combination.

Any one of the OPC servers for Bailey would work on Windows Server 2003 with INICI03 and INICI13 hardware. I have personally tried products from a few leading OPC companies in the industry and they all worked well. One thing to take note is the compliance of the OPC Servers with the Bailey CIU Firmware. Some OPC Servers do not work with the new CIU firmwares.
