I wouldn't connect any RS-485 terminals to any RS-232 wiring points. Each runs on a different voltage standard. Something might fry and smoke.
RS-232 to RS-485 converters are made to bridge the different electrical conditions. Any commercial converter will come with some identification for which terminal is which.
Thanks Already had a 232 to 485 converter. Everything worked out ok. Device that we were linking data to was not picture clear in its manual. After looking @ schematic of converter, figured it out.
