Running induction motors beyond the rated speed using VSD

William Sturm

Yes and No.

You can run beyond the synchronous speed (1800 or 3600 RPM is typical in the USA) in most cases.  Torque will start dropping linearly, power will remain constant.  If the motor has a maximum rated RPM beyond the synchronous speed (a VFD rated motor should), then you should not exceed it without contacting the mfg for advice.
