The orignal RS232 PPI adapters were really nothng more then a 2 wire RS485 to RS232 converter. The newer ones are more complex and have a chip set tin them that manages the RS232 connection to the higher speed bus when necessary.
In Kepware's Siemens S7-200 help file you will see a wire diagram for connecting with an Adapter.
