How can i select volumetric flow meter like PD meter, Turbine flow meter. Our line size is 3" but we need max 40 nm3/hr range flow meter. If we select 2" flow meter is flow will be restricted. What is the basic criteria for selection of Flow meter.

Hi Sanjib,

The sizing of flow meter like PD Meter & Turbine Flow Meter is based on application's metering flow range; though it can be selected based on the pipeline size but that could loose the turn down on your operating flow range.

I suggest you to have a look at MPMS5.2 & 3 regarding to the factors which are important on this issue. Flow rate, specific gravity, density are parameters which are important to select a meter.

There is a curve in the API (MPMS) that you could select the type of t he meter based on the SG. and the rate.

Hope this helps you.

It might help if you advise some process details. Fluid type, density viscosity, is it clean and air free? Turbines and PD meters are both available for gases.

PD meters can be sized at 4" and installed in 3" pipe using reducers, turbines will require straight pipe lengths before and after the meter and may also require flow straighteners to remove swirl. PD meters can manage a very wide viscosity range but turbine meters (which are velocity meters) are very viscosity sensitive in comparison. Size and materials of construction both are significant factors in cost. PD meters can return lower pressure drops.

Maybe neither meter is the best choice for your application, perhaps you might need to consider coriolis meters, vortex meters or mag meters.

Lots of factors to consider so more information is always helpful.
