Sensors for water quality

we wre doing a project proposal on the use of sensors to monitor the water quality of a river system.
Would anyone know how to go about this?
What are the factors we have to consider specially when it comes to the transmission of the readings to a control center kilometers away from the site?
Does anyone knows an internet site dedicated to these types of sensors; where we can find information about cost, economic life and the likes?

follow the url:
www.hach.com

HACH makes good analysers for water. the principal parameter is the turbidity (see SS6); this means suspensions from the water. for treatement stations it is necessary to know the total and dissolved chlorine. there are many producers, but for some reasons I prefer HACH because they make robust equipments.
to search other producers, use search engines like www.yahoo.com and www.google.com, with the words "water quality sensors".

Good luck,
George
