Serial data recording device

Thread Starter

I need a device that can read in serial data RS232 and be programmed to extract the required data from the ASCII string.

I need a minimum of three RS232 inputs. It also needs to have a comms port, i.e. Ethernet, Modbus or Modbus Plus to communicate with a SCADA HMI computer.
We use Opto22 PAC I/O to do exactly what you're looking for. You can add multiple Serial Port Modules (RS232 or 485/422) as well as Ethernet connectivity. The Brains have 2 Ethernet ports available and Opto even supply the subroutines to do Modbus (see

A few ideas of this type of interface. We've done systems using the controllers as a Serial Tunnel through Ethernet so our customers could access multiple serial devices from a central location, Modbus serial, Modbus TCP interfaces, modem interface (dial out and dial in), as well as serial interfaces to Bailey DCS systems (not an off the shelf protocol). All the above items have been integrated into or used as a SCADA application.

If you're looking for more info on how to set this up, send us an email at [email protected].

Have a look at the MARC Omnii-Comm as a
potential solution. It has up to 5 serial ports and supports over 60 protocols. It can extract data from ASCII strings and place it into database where it can be accessed using standard protocols such as Modbus. The new models have an Ethernet port that supports Modbus/TCP and Ethernet/IP.
