SERIAL DATA TO TURN ON DISCRETE OUTPUT

I need to listen in on an existing serial ASCII signal to a remote scale readout with a splitter and trigger a contact closure when the desired weight is reached. Is there a low cost relay that will accept a serial input to trigger its outputs? I realize that this could be done with a PC but I would like something smaller and simpler.

You can try to use a micro PLC. For example, Simatic S7-200 (CPU 221) + RS 485/232 converter cable can do it with less than 250 USD. I know A-B and other PLC vendors have such solutions also, but I am not sure if they are cheaper. Hakan Ozevin

piece of cake with most microcontrollers, even a 20 pin with serial port like those of atmel/ philips series will do. Still easier for small quantities (no devp headache) companies like z -world, tiny tiger offer complete boards(sbc) with serial port, i/o and you name it prog in basic or c. check out the dontronic web site.
