servo motor resolution and mechanical design

I am having trouble matching a required indexing step to the encoder count of a servo motor which has an encoder resolution of 8000.

This conveyor system uses friction drive, where a belt is driven by a wheel with known diameter and is stretch with a free running wheel on the other side.

Normally, how would you do it and what do you consider?
