I'm new to the Siemens Step7 PLCs, but if I'm not mistaken, there is a product that Siemens sells called SimuPLC (or PLCSim, perhaps) for simulating S7 PLCs. It does not, from what I hear, simulate more than one PLC at a time, so a Profibus or ethernet network would be out of the question, unless multiple processes running copies of SimuPLC could use IPC to simulate the network.

Hi All Siemens sells two products for simulation, one is called PLCsim, and is used to simulate the process and test software, it is an add on to the S7 programming package and is very neat for testing a program before downloading. The second package is called Simit which is a real simulation. It is available in various formats, I have used it quite successfully to test 2 projects on Profibus. The software is loaded onto a PC with a Profibus interface and this is plugged into your PLC, you can then build a process model and test the whole system. This is a more complete simulation and tests your hardware configuration and the complete system as it will run in the plant. The Simit package is a little difficult to find information on but if you go to Siemens website and search for Simit you will find info on it. In our firm, we use Simac to simulate all kind of machines using PLC. We use it for lot of kinds of PLC (Schneider TSX..., Siemens S5,S7..., Rockwell PLC5, SLC500, Control Logix,...). You can find Simac at http://www.prosyst.fr/us/Simulation.htm

We provide simulation software for Siemens SIMATIC S5 PLC's (95/115/155) including the TELEPERM/XP. You can simulate a complete plant system (we have simulators with 20 or so PLC's being simulated in addition to the process model). The complete internal 'state' of the PLC may be saved to a disk file and reloaded at a later time and testing continued from where you left off. We mainly use the software to produce operator training simulators for power plants but it can be used for engineering tests. See our web site at http://www.powertech.co.uk/simulators.

Hi All I have committed to Siemens to prepare a case study on the projects which I have employed Simit, but unfortunately time is not on my side and hasn't been for some time now. As regards the application to power plants, I am quite certain that the system could be used for such an application, in fact if you search the Siemens web site for information, I have half an idea there was a case study for a power plant provided on the site. For a power plant you would have to use Simit differently to the way I did my testing, and this would be due to the huge volume of I/O you would very likely be dealing with. Simit is capable and does have the tools for this, you should research this on their web site. There is a new product available now called TrySim, take a look at www.trysim.de although I am not sure this will solve your problems for a power station. Regards Donald Pittendrigh
