Could anybody tell me if it is possible / easy to communicate with a Siemens Sinumeric 840D CNC?
I want to be able to read values from the machine via OPC, and have been unable to find any clear indication in the Siemens web documentation indicating whether or not communications (via Profibus-DP or Ethernet) are standard, optional, or in some cases even possible, depending on the hardware involved (which MMC, which OP terminal used, etc).
It almost looks like there is an embedded OPC server (similar to the way there is in the WinAC soft PLC) but nothing has been clear on this. I think that the machine is based on an embedded S7 processor, and with Profibus-DP I should be able to communicate with it, but I don't know, and I don't have the machine to play with.
Any help would be appreciated.
