SLC500 & Panelview

Site has a DH485 network held together by some 1747-AIC link couplers.
One of their panelviews died, so they got a new one. They picked up a RS232 one by mistake.

Anyone know the cheapest way of connecting it in?

Depends.

If it is DH485 RS232 then its a matter of buying a NETAIC module.

If it is DF1 RS232 its a lost cause, unless you can connect directly to a processor with a DF1 RS232 port on it (such as a 5/03 or higher).

They are the same panelview with a different flashed firmware. It is possible to download the DH485 firmware (not AB recommended) to convert this unit. It is a little bit tricky, from memory the printer port is used to download but it can be done.

Little known fact...you can download the DHD-485 firmware to a DF1 PanelView and it does work. THe firmware is included on the PanelBuilder32 CD...if you have one.

That's not enough information; there are several flavors of RS-232 PanelViews.

I recommend that you return the incorrect unit for credit and send the failed unit into the repair loop. If you have an urgent situation, which isn't apparent from your post, you can use the Immediate Exchange system, where they send you a remanufactured unit as fast as possible and you have thirty days to return the failed unit. Either of these alternatives is far less expensive than buying a new PanelView.

Hope this helps!

To everyone posting this trick:

The problem isn't the protocol, it's the physical media. The original post described a classic DH485 network, with no RS-232 components at all. The right way to fix this mess without buying anything extra or modifying the
existing configuration is to exchange the wrong part for the right part!

Hope this helps!

Larry,

What we are saying is the 232 and 485 panelviews are the same except for the firmware. You can flash a 232 panelview with the dh485 firmware and it is now a 485 panelview. You then plug it into the net aic+ exactly the same way as you would the 485 panelview. (Which it now is) Obviously if you can swap it with the supplier then that is the best option, but if he is stuck with it then half an hour of his labour is a small investment to make the PV usable for him.

I have been stuck the same with with a leftover 232 PV1000 (redundant factory spare, very expensive unit) and a job that required a 485 PV. it is little things like that that can give you guru status.

Alan

The original correspondent had no 1761-NET-AIC modules; specifically, they had only 1747-AIC modules. No RS-232. All DH485.

I try to recommend the solution that benefits the client best. If you care to donate a 1761-NET-AIC, then you have the best answer!

Hope this helps!
