An exhaust diffuser converts velocity of flue gases into static pressure so that flue gases coming out at high velocity of a GT exhaust do not damage HRSG components? What if a GT has no HRSG, i.e. it runs in open cycle then what is the significance of exhaust diffuser?

Pressure at a GT exhaust is in mbars while atmospheric pressure is about 1 bar, then how flue gases travel upwards in stack against higher atmospheric pressure? Is that they are much hotter (& so much lighter) than ambient air?
