i am interested in the development of an ultrasonic sensor to measure crop growth, is it possible to use ultarsonics to measure the height of a crop above the ground??

Ultrasonic sensors do work on solids, but . . .

Ultrasonics needs a distinctive echo return to work. The varying topology of plant heights might appear as indistinguishable noise in the echo profile.

I suspect that initial germination and early growth won't appear as anything but noise, in comparison with a strong echo reflection of the ground soil.

And to some extent, suitable echo return is probably dependent on the crop.

A crop like soybeans, which has a broad leaf which eventually forms a canopy, would probably provide a better echo than corn, where the tassles are too narrow and the echo reflection would probably come off the leaves, not the tassles.
