Uncertainty in measurement !

Hi,
Its all about uncertainty ! I have a very basic query regarding it. While calculating uncertainty associated in measurement the procedure laid down by the NIST and other manuals is that for type - A you need to know the relation between the input and output parameters to find the amount of uncertainty in output due to individual input parameters .

It is simple for the examples given viz. Volume of cylinder. However if i wish to find the uncertiainty involved for a complex equipment e.g Calibrators etc AND if the manufacturer has not given the governing equations ie the input out
relationship THEN what do i do ?

DO i just calculate the uncertainty using the type B method? PLease do reply as soon as possible
