Using parallel port for controlling external device

If we look at parallel port there are 25 pins in D_Type connector: 8 for data registers, 5 for status registers and 4 for control registers. Remainnig 8 pins are grounded.

How can I switch on/off an LED through a mechanical relay?

Which pins I have to connect to the LED? data pins, status pins or control pins?
