Water level sensor

Hi Everyone.

Is there a handheld portable device that can measure the distance/depth to a water surface? We have a job in which we will be looking down a wetwell and need to measure the depth to the water level.

In the past, we have rigged a floating devise (empty bottle) to a measuring tape to measure the water level, but we are trying to move to something a little bit more sophisticated. We thought a laser distance gun would work, but apparently the laser doesn't work well with water or wet surfaces. .

You could try this FWR30 from Endress+Hauser. It's a battery operated 80 GHz radar with a SIM inside that sends data to E+H cloud named Netilion. You get the data via web connection with any fixed or portable device, tablet, smartphone...
Cost is sure higher than the empty bottle you used, but still reasonable: some hundreds EUR
