What sensor should I use for water content in compost?

I had posted about compost before in this same section. What kind of sensor should I use to measure the water content in the compost. As far as I know, the available sensors measure the water vapor content in air or other gases. Can it
be used to measure the water content in compost?

Soil moisture can be measured using neutron moderation. It is primarily the hydrogen that is measured. It may not be practical or economic in your circumstances. There are commercial units available. Try a search.

A simple alternative if the material is reasonably friable, consistent, homogeneous and accuracy is not particularly critical might be to use conductivity probes. Try doing some simple tests with metal rods using a multimeter to measure the resistance between them.
