I've chosen not to build a new garage on the rear of my property, but rather to improve my old attached garage. I intend to convert a two-car garage into a one-car "workshop," as well as construct a new parking area adjacent to the home with a lean-to over it for covered parking.

One of the most important things I need to accomplish is vault the garage ceiling so that I can utilize my scissor lift. I will also request that the engineer offer designs for vaulting our first floor ceilings, since my wife and I intend to open up that area in the near future.


Question is, what should I look for in an engineer?

However I understand changes in domestic properties would be dealt with by a Surveyor.

If you prefer engineering designs then I would suggest, from your brief description you would hire somone with load bearing structure experience.
