hellos!!

Greetings for the day!

Currently I m working on diesel engine driven compressor system. I have to use one Sensor which works on 24 v dc supply. How do I generate 24 v dc supply from my 12 v dc system. (battery, engine)

waiting for your answers
thanks in advance

Are you sure you need 24 Volts? Sometimes a sensor is rated for a higher Voltage than it needs.

Share the sensor make/part No and current requirements there may be another solution.

Yes, either DC-DC converter or inverter + power supply. Option 1 probably less expensive for enough to run one sensor, Option 2 if you need bulk.

hello,

thanks for your support. refer below details for your information.
Sensor will be MSA's Prima XP will be used for Carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring. Its relay output will be used to trip the system if CO contents exceeds the set point.

Many companies sell boost converters. Try automation direct or even digikey.

You might have to package it, but for example I just used one to make a portable battery operated 3.7 to 24 volt supply for testing inputs.

I found a document on-line ID 07 1818 MSA2014 that states under Gas Monitor Requirements.

Operating Voltage - gas monitor can operate between 10-28 VDC. The manual on-line however says 19-28 VDC. If you are not using 2 Wire 4-20 mA just the relay output, I think there's a good chance it will work off your battery.

Remember a 2 wire transmitter also allows a minimum of 5 Volts for the signal. The wiring for the relay output model will be 3 Wire
+ - & Switch.

I quote from the manual
"The power supply is defined as 24 VDC. If the input supply voltage at
the terminal of the transmitter is less than 10 V, the device will shut down. The 24 V power supply shall fulfill the requirements for a
PELV/SELV of EN 60950"

In other words it will work fine on the 13 Volts from the battery.
If you were using the 4-20 mA signal it would be another matter, you would then need 15 Volts as you could possibly lose 5 Volts across the load or you could use a non standard input impedance say 125 Ohms.
The poster said he will use the relay output option so I assume he is not using 4-20 mA, it needs to be wired as a 3 wire device.

Chuck,

He said 12 Volt battery system which I took to be the engine battery (nominal 13 Volts). Even so 12 Volts is more than the transmitter needs. It calls for minimum of 10 Volts at the transmitter terminals.

Obviously if it was 2 wire 4-20 mA it would run out of steam.

I'm sure someone will point out the battery will be less than 12 Volts while cranking.

Hello Roy,

Yeah I agree, that might work. Voltage drop during start really doesn't matter since he won't need the detector till after the engine starts at which point alternator will output 14+V.

Hello,

You can use a cheap marine duty voltage step-up converter. There is one on Amazon for $13.77. Specifications: Input voltage: 12V DC Input range: 8-18V DC Output voltage: 24V DC Output current: 3A (Max) / 72W Case material: die-cast aluminum Potting material: epoxy sealed Brand new. The output current should be more than enough to power a sensor. Here is the link:

Good luck,
