Purge On - Purge Off on Mark VI

Hi All,

I would like to know when we should press button for Purge On and what condition/parameter if the purge on was completed then we can go for Purge Off in Mark VI? I'm in operation and I don't have access to check inside the toolbox in cimplicity.

Thanks in advance for any explanation.

Iqballhud,

We are glad you found control.com. However, we aren't at your site with you, so we don't know what kind of turbine you are trying to operate, what fuel(s) it operates on, what HMI display these buttons appear on, etc.

A GE Mark* turbine control system can be used on many different turbines and types of turbines. All turbines are not the same, and all Mark* turbine control systems are not the same. And even for the same turbine or turbine type the HMI displays can also be different (GE is wonderful like that!).

So, tell us about the turbine you are trying to operate, what fuel(s) it operates on, and what HMI display these buttons appear on--at a minimum--and we can try to help you. But without more information, we can't provide very much in the way of help or description.

CSA,

I was following the control.com since long actually, about three years ago. But I'm afraid to ask my question relate gas turbine because the gas turbine is really something new for me.

I was thinking nobody will help me to teach me about this machine. Up to one day I was decided to made simulation gas turbine to get better understanding about this machine. The simulation for start up and shutdown based on GE manual operation and based on data taken from the actual condition. And the simulation was succeed but without Purge On and Purge Off condition (this steps is not mentioned detail in manual operation).
Now, i feel proud and try little bit confidence because of you CSA, you replied my post.
I was submitted two post with same concern today, because after I was submitted then I was checked in "My Post" then the message no post.

GE Nuovo Pignone gas turbine, Frame 9E with MK VIe.
From HMI display, it is under CCC Manual Control group which contents four buttons: Load, Unload, Purge On and Purge Off.

Actually I want to know the rung diagram of Purge On and Purge Off.

When we need to press button Purge On.

What condition we can perform Purge On

Where the Purge On signal will go and what the logic diagram will do while Purge On is performing?

What parameters if the Purge On is completed then we can go for Purge Off?

After Purge Off button being pressed, then the signal will go where and what the next logic will be doing?

As I'm not turbine control engineer and I don't have access to see into toolbox.

And also to clear my question, when we need to perform Load or Unload.

Thanks in advance for your guidance.
Cheers.

Control.com is a moderated forum. Depending on when you post a message to the forum, it can take a couple of hours before your message appears. Also, if you submit a message to be posted after 10 pm and before 8 am, eastern time in the United States it will not appear until after 8 am.

Things are becoming a little clearer.

It seems the GE-design Frame 9E at your site drives a compressor, not a generator, That’s a VERY important difference. As was written, not all turbines are exactly alike, and in this case the major difference is that the turbine drives a compressor and not a generator. I believe CCC stands Compressor Control Corporation, which is a company that makes control systems for controlling and protecting (primarily) centrifugal compressors such as are used for compressing natural gas and also for making Liquified Natural Gas.

Now the "Purge" bit makes more sense. Because it didn't make a lot of sense for a generator-drive application unless it used a non-typical fuel like Naphtha or some unusual gas.

So, not being able to see the application code running in the Mark VIe at your site about the only thing that can be said is that the two buttons are used to initiate and complete a purge of the compressor, either to remove air or to remove gas. We can't know if the valves and sensors involved in the purging process are driven by the Mark VIe or the CCC compressor control system ; the buttons could be used to send discrete signals to the CCC control system to initiate or complete the purge using valves and sensors driven by the CCC control system, or it could be a combination of the two with some valves and/or sensors being driven by the Mark VIe and some being driven by the CCC control system.

If you know how to get to the configuration of CIMPLICITY buttons you can get a start on figuring out what the signals associated with the two PURGE ON and PURGE OFF buttons do. But as this is not a typical turbine application and it involves a third-party control system we can't be of much more help without being able to see the application code running in the Mark VIe, the I/O (Inputs & Outputs) and CIMPLICITY (or maybe PROFICY Machine Edition) displays in use at your site.

But you seem to have figured out a lot of things by yourself without too much help and you should be able to figure this out with the little bit of help above. I'm sure somewhere in the plant are Operations Manuals which will also describe when to initiate a purge and possibly even what will happen during the purge which will be useful as well, because it probably details which control system does what during purging. The buttons are probably on the gas turbine HMI because the gas turbine drives the compressor and the plant designers or the packager of the turbine and compressor (GE Nuovo Pignone?) wanted most if not all operation to be done from one HMI system, not multiple HMIs.

Hope this helps! Please write back to let us know what you discover!

It's clear to me now from the information that was you explained if the CCC and compressor is not under MKVIe control.

I have a look from HMI, if the Purge On relate with the antisurge valve (CCC) which It will perform during the turbine initial starting up. And the Purge Off will be activated if the Purge On completed.
Detail signal and sequence during Purge On, I'll try to ask with DCS engineer, I wish he will share about the information.

Now i have more clear idea about the turbine scope and MKVI control. Thank you so much CSA to clear my doubt.
