Transformer - TX Abbreviation

Just a quick question... Does anyone know why a transformer is abbreviated to TX? What does the TX stand for?

Are you sure it's abbreviated as TX rather than X indicating the transformer number (T1, T2, ...). I believe TR appended with # is more commonly used.

If not I imagine it's someone's coined abbreviation for transformer. The "trans-" prefix is commonly abbreviated as "X", such as XFMR.

TX without any context other than electric-related would be interpreted by most as "transmitter", IMO.

We use "XFR" for on-screen displays. I've never seen "TX" and agree that "TX" would more likely be read as "transmitter" (and "RX" for "receiver").
