6, 12, 24, 48 are standards because that was what you got with various combination of packaged lead acid batteries.

Started with the first widespread electric network, the telephone and for all I know, the telegraph before it.

To this day, telephone exchanges have battery rooms. That's also why we had 6.3 and 12.6 volt heater voltages on tubes and pilot lights, etc.

I guess there hasn't been a good reason to change.
