I am trying to build a electric motor dynamometer to test AC/DC motors up to 20HP. I need help understanding some of the parts please.

I have a image I found on the web of a similar Dyno I am trying to build.

On the far right I know that is the motor being tested. In the Middle is the Torque Sensor or Torque Transducer.

But what exactly is the item on the far left?

Is this just another motor or is it a special kind of motor?

I thank you very much for your time and help. I love the forum but have never posted before.

Also what is the grey piece in the middle?
