I have some sample drawings which you are welcome to download, they are drawn in a common European format.

The simple rules are, Cables are numbered with the page and index of the first time they appear on the drawings, all cables with the same number are connected, terminals have the number of the cable in them, and links have no number.

There are many other schemes, with advantages and disadvantages, but you should remember that drawings are really only needed when building (and modifying) the system or fault finding. Fault finding is when good drawings are _really_ needed. Showing components once, and functional grouping, make the job much easier, for example if the whole E-Stop chain is shown on one page then simply working down the links, with a meter is trivial.
