I'm a maintenance mechanic wanting to get into basic programming ladder logic, and my elec. engineer gave me this AB SLC 500. I don't have anything to go with it because they have moved on to bigger and better and threw out all the old. I have a computer to set it up but nothing else.

For all of you that started like me, let me know where I can maybe get this thing going. I appreciate any amount of help and donations.

I'd suggest starting at http://www.mrplc.com. You can get a lot of help there, as well as links to other sites that can help.

You need a copy of RSLogix, and a PIC module serial convertor. Best bet is to talk with local AB office for an older copy of RSLogix and a PIC.. they aren’t used very much!!

Where are you located?

First, pl. check whether the CPU is SLC 5/01 or 5/02. If it is one these two you require hand held programmer for carrying out programming. If the CPU is 5/03 and above, you can use PC with RS Logics 500 programming software. For learning basics of the Ladder logic instruction you can refer Help menu in the RS Logics 500 software. You also need to prepare some sort of logic diagrams for your application before starting programming the PLC.

You can also browse the AB website http://WWW.AB.COM for online manuals containign the description on the ladder logic instructions and PLC hardware.

Hope the above will help you.
