PLC versus DCS

Can I consider Modicon quantum PLC for process control of Boiler House. Can it be considered equivalent to DCS of honeywell HC900, Siemens PCS7, ABB 800F, Yokogawa cs3000

No. Please recognize that the Modicon PLC includes only the controller and I/O elements of a system. All DCS contain one or more controllers and I/O, but also contain the networks to link everything into a system, one or more HMI units to serve as operator consoles, and the software for feedback loop control, networking, and operator displays. For example, the Siemens PCS7 is based on a Siemens popular PLC, but includes everything else necessary for a complete DCS. Modicon does not offer this type of integrated software, but there are third party suppliers that may be able to integrate the Quantum into a complete process control system. Many of these system integrators have installed boiler control systems.

Key difference between PLC & DCS is deterministic scan time. DCS will have deterministic scantime as required by process.(sometime known as periodic task)As per Quantam manual it has only one periodic taks. also DCS controllers are tightly integrated with Operator stations.

Quantum is a PLC and can not even come near to any DCS product. It has to go long to meet DCS requirements. HC 900 is also Hybrid Controller. If selecting honeywell. Go for Experion PKS C300. I will also suggest to explore Rockwell Plant PAx.
