What is the difference between AI(Artificial Intelligence) based robots and control based robots?

AI based robots(like for example sophia) are popular now a days but what is the difference between AI based robots and control based robots? I know that AI(Machine Learnig) based robots work on large amount of training data but how this is different from control based robots? Do control based robots you same concepts?
