Walmart Deploys Fox Robotics’ FoxBot Forklifts in Logistics Operations

April 30, 2024 by Austin Futrell

After a successful 16-month pilot program, Walmart has entered into a partnership with Fox Robotics to deploy additional FoxBot autonomous forklifts in four of its distribution centers.

Marking a significant milestone, Fox Robotics, a manufacturer of autonomous forklift technology, has inked a multi-year program agreement with Walmart. This landmark collaboration, which follows a successful 16-month proof of concept, kicks off with the deployment of 19 additional FoxBot autonomous forklifts across four Walmart distribution centers. The potential for expansion looms large, a testament to the promising future of the company’s partnership.

FoxBot Autonomous Forklifts

The FoxBot is a tri-wheeled electric forklift that works autonomously. The forklift operates using “deep learning-powered vision” with the help of LiDAR sensors, mounted cameras, and software. Central to the FoxBot is a proprietary AI and machine learning system, enabling the robot to make dynamic decisions. From identifying pallet locations to ensuring precise load handling, the FoxBot operates efficiently and carefully, reducing the risk of product damage associated with manual forklift operations.

Fox Robotics has designed the FoxBot to keep operations going around the clock. Currently, the forklift can pick blocks and whitewood pallets, identify pallet load patterns, and handle common picking concerns, such as if a pallet is wrapped in plastic, double-stacked, or damaged.

End-to-End Automation

Exciting advancements are on the horizon for Fox Robotics' autonomous forklifts, with additional upcoming features set to improve warehouse operations further. While human workers will still be needed for tasks such as opening trailers and clearing debris, anticipated FoxBot enhancements include:

  • Trailer Loading: Fox Robotics is gearing up to introduce trailer-loading capabilities to its forklifts. This feature will enhance the process of loading goods onto trailers, optimizing efficiency throughout distribution centers.

  • Drop-off at Conveyors: The upcoming drop-off at conveyors feature will enable FoxBot forklifts to deliver pallets to conveyor systems for further processing. This integration promises to enhance workflow.

  • Non-Standard Pallets: Fox Robotics is breaking new ground by equipping its forklifts to handle non-standard pallets. This capability ensures versatility and adaptability in accommodating various load sizes and configurations, catering to diverse warehouse requirements.

  • Put-Away to Racking: With the introduction of put-away to racking functionality, FoxBot forklifts will automatically store palletized goods in warehouse racking systems. This feature enhances inventory management efficiency by automating replenishing stock in designated storage locations.

  • Pin-Wheeled Whitewood Pallets: Fox Robotics is set to tackle the challenge of handling pin-wheeled whitewood pallets with precision and reliability. By leveraging advanced sensing and manipulation capabilities, FoxBot forklifts will maneuver and transport these specialized pallet configurations, expanding their scope of application in warehouse environments.

Fox Robotics and Walmart

Notably, Walmart's commitment goes beyond operational integration. The retail giant has also invested in Fox Robotics, securing a minority stake in the company and proving its confidence in Fox Robotics' future. The FoxBot forklift is purpose-built to revolutionize warehouse loading docks, with over 3 million pallet pulls automatically processed across North America since its commercial launch in 2021.

With Walmart's endorsement and investment, Fox Robotics stands at the forefront of warehouse automation, destined to improve efficiency, safety, and productivity in the global supply chain ecosystem. As the partnership unfolds, the stage is set for a new era of innovation, collaboration, and growth in automated logistics.
