Hello folks, I have been approached by a co-worker in the lab about finding an on-line analyser to measure dielectric "breakdown" current in a seal oil circuit. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks

Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring has been used in the UK to monitor dielectric breakdown in HV transformer oil. Not quite the same thing as measuring the actual current, but it has successfully been used to detect deteoration of the oil.

Another approach that has been used to detect breakdown of transformer oil is on-line dissolved gas analysis.

Would these approaches meet your application?

AMETEK Drexelbrook makes an on-line device to monitor the changes in dielectric properties of different liquids.

There are a couple of applications questions I would have first:
1. Is your co-worker looking for a lab device, or something to be installed in a process line?
2. Is the water percentage constant? The presence of water will skew any changes that you will see in the oil.
3. Is the temperature constant?
4. Do your lab co-worker know how much the dielectric will vary?

Please give me a call to discuss.

Kindest Regards,
Kevin
