Thickness measurement

I work for a pharmaceutical industry and i need to measure the thickness of a film of gelatine. This film has some unique characteristics:

- Thickness range: 10-40 thousandths of an inch

- Color: we have variations of color from translucent to opaque and transparent

- The film is in motion

- The width is from 7 to 10 inches

- The surface in a part of the process has lubricant, this is not a limitant because the lubrication can be done after the thickness measurement.

Some sensor have been recommended to me as the gamma, capacitive, etc. But i'm not sure about wich decision is best for this application.

I will appreciate your help,

Thank you,
Alexandra

I can't give you an exact answer, but I would start talking to reps from Keyence, OMRON, SICK, Banner, and the like. You kind of have to ask them how they know it will work with your process variations, however, because they love to come in and demonstrate that Sensor "a" works with one part. Some of the better ones will tell you if they don't have anything that will work. I'm assuming the film is rather soft? Contact rollers can work good with a linear displacement sensor unless the media can be compressed.
