Dunkermotoren Introduces Functional Safety Encoder for Reliable Positioning
The AFS58 encoder delivers SIL2 and Performance Level d compliance, high-resolution Sin/Cos feedback, and a rugged, plug-and-play design for smart and precise axis monitoring in demanding environments.
Dunkermotoren has introduced the AFS58 safety encoder, designed to provide position feedback while meeting functional safety requirements in industrial motion systems. The new absolute encoder uses a 2,048 per revolution resolution Sin/Cos output for accurate position, speed, and direction monitoring. It is intended for use with Dunkermotoren’s BG66, BG75, and BG95 motor series, enabling integration directly into existing drive setups.

AFS58 Functional Safety Encoder
The AFS58 absolute encoder provides a Sin/Cos output with 2,048 pulses per revolution, enabling high-resolution position feedback via interpolation. An encoder that uses this type of signal is commonly used in motion systems where smoother position tracking and higher accuracy are required compared to standard digital encoders. High signal quality allows for more precise detection of position, speed, and direction, which is especially important in closed-loop control systems. The AFS58 has a maximum operating speed of 6,000 rpm, making it capable of supporting a range of motor-driven applications.

Functional Safety and System Integration
The AFS58 safety encoder is rated up to SIL2 and Performance Level d for use in motion systems, where position and speed feedback are part of a safety function. This functional safety means that the AFS58 can support applications that require monitored movement and controlled stopping, rather than just basic position tracking. This includes applications such as CNC machinery and robotics.
The AFS58 safety encoder operates on a 5 V supply and uses a standard electrical interface, allowing it to be integrated into typical control architectures with minimal additional hardware. To simplify wiring, Dunkermotoren uses M12 connectors to keep wiring consistent and repeatable, which makes installation easier.
Mechanical Design and Application Fit
The AFS58 follows a standard 58 mm encoder format, so it fits into typical motor and feedback setups without requiring much adjustment. It’s built for continuous operation in industrial environments, with options for added protection depending on the application. Dunkermotoren has designed the AFS58 for integration with the BG66, BG75, and BG95 motor series, targeting applications that require both precision and safe operation.

Precision Feedback and Signal Quality
Dunkermotoren’s AFS58 safety encoder combines high-resolution feedback with functional safety certification in a compact, integration-ready design. The AFS58 brings together Sin/Cos feedback, SIL2 and PL d certification, and compatibility with Dunkermotoren’s BG motor series in a single encoder. It’s suited for applications where position feedback needs to be accurate and also tied into a safety function, without adding extra complexity to the system.
