Gas Turbine IVG
I think the rated speed of rotation of the compressor has little to do with the need for VSV's. The purpose of VSV's and VIGV's is to prevent compressor stall (similar to surge on a centrifugal compressor). The rated speed of the gas turbine is a function of the diameter of the wheels. The air...

IGV on Temperature Control
sardar108, I don't think you will increase steam production over base load condition. The IGV temperature control line is below the base load temperature control line. While you may be able to close the IGV's using manual IGV control, this will not increase steam production. You might...

What makes a generator increase load
CSA, Controls for the steam turbine and HRSG on a single shaft 9FB with an A15 ST were most likely designed in Schenectady. The GT controls could have been either Belfort or Greenville, depending on when this plant was built. The steam turbine controls would have been by Steam Turbine in...

AHOP Starts During Fuel Changeover in Frame-III
Barinda75, Is HSD "high speed diesel" as CSA stated, or is it "high sulfur diesel" or something else? I'm not sure it makes any difference, but if it is high sulfur fuel, there may be fuel treatment equipment that has to start up, though I doubt that it would use GT control oil. You stated...

Mark-V to Mark-VIe Upgrade
esdqap18, I recommend you read a reply written by CSA in "Control System Upgrade" thread on 30 May 2018. Look closely at the complaints he has about GE documentation on these upgrades, and include requirements in your specification that these issues be addressed to your satisfaction. There...

Mark 2 Control Startup Issue
adeel, I would advise you to look into any external trip inputs to the Mark II panel. I don't know what the load equipment is, maybe a compressor? Typically there is at least one hardwired input from the load or other equipment external to the gas turbine that will trip the gas turbine...

Mark 2 Control Startup Issue
Haroon, What was overhauled? What, if anything, was done to the control system during the overhaul? Is 82% HP SPEED the correct setting for 14HS? Can you provide the logic for the PCD FAILURE ALARM? Are there any other alarms appearing - both before and after the event? I am inclined to...

Gas Turbine FR9E High Exhaust Pressure
>I will check it from DCS historian since this issue was >identified back in 2013 and still persisting. What instrument are you measuring exhaust back pressure with? If you are relying on the pressure transmitter supplied with the gas turbine, have you verified its calibration? And, are you...

Gas Turbine FR9E High Exhaust Pressure
>1. What can be the reason for high exhaust pressure Most likely is an obstruction in the exhaust path. Potential obstructions include fouling of the HRSG tubes, improper damper or stack closure position (if dampers or stack closure are present), catalytic converter fouling (if you have...

GE Mark VI as DCS for the Whole Power Plant
Achraf, If you are looking only for straight steam plants with GE steam turbines with Mark VIe turbine controls and with Mark VIe controls for boiler control and maybe balance of plant (BOP) control, I think the list is very small. All of the plants I know of that used the Mark VIe as a plant...

Relays and Galvanic Insulation at PLC Output
A relay provides galvanic ISOlation, by virtue of the fact that the relay coil is powered by the PLC power supply. But the contacts of the relay that actuate the load are "dry" and the power is provided by the load equipment, not from the PLC power supply.

Mark VI "Motor Running" Message
If the circuit breaker to the motor is open, there will be no power to the control transformer and the contactor will not be able to close. I suppose if the drive shaft is seized, you could have a brief period of time where it would indicate running, until the overload trips the contactor or the...

Control on Temperature In To or Out From Heating Process?
Erik, I am not sure there is a clear "correct answer," but I would suggest using both TI 01 and TI 02. I am assuming the desire is to maintain the metal mass at some specified temperature without being able to directly measure its temperature. I would guess that you would have some upper...

Why Two Gas Valves (SRV GCV) in Frame 5 GT
Isulamu, The SRV (Speed Ratio Valve) controls P2 as a function of speed. The purpose is to keep P2 pressure a constant amount higher than compressor discharge pressure so as to maintain a more or less constant differential pressure across the GCV (Gas Control Valve). The SRV also acts as a...

MARK I Card Calibration
dontknowman, The main document(s) you will need is the Control Specification. This may consist of more than 1 document - my sometimes faulty memory thinks 3 documents were supplied back in Mark I days. At least 1 of them is necessary to calibrate the analog control cards. I also suggest...

Looking for Insights About Dual Configuration in Mark VIe
Isulamu, I believe the controller can be forced to standby from Control Station ST. You can also power down a controller and then turn it back on, which should force the other controller to take over all the I/O packs. But, please understand that it has been nearly 9 years since I was on...

Looking for Insights About Dual Configuration in Mark VIe
CSA, I believe what you have written is correct. The dual redundant configuration MkVIe controls have been used in combined cycle power plants for HRSG and BOP control. I don't remember anything specific about the TPRG and TREG. I also don't recall any use of the dual redundant...

Drum Level Measurement
The transmitters should be ranged for the differential pressures they will measure at the operating pressure and at saturation conditions. There is a significant difference in the water and steam densities at operating condition as compared to the cold condition. Do some research, this subject...

Steam Turbine Start Up (Rolling) Procedure
Aptx4869, You are absolutely correct on the reverse flow through the HP steam turbine for cooling purposes. I did sit in on some design reviews on the controls for this shortly before my retirement, but I never had the chance to work on a project involving this design. All the projects I...
